IFCA Boards French Fishing Vessel

A French fishing vessel has been boarded and inspected this weekend in an exercise to ensure that there was no illegal fishing in Scilly’s waters.

The Marine Management Organisation and the Isles of Scilly Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority undertook two days of joint activity using the MMO’s Penryn-based staff and the Council’s fisheries enforcement officer Doug Holt on the islands’ IFCA rib, the Matt Lethbridge.

The officers checked a 24m stern trawler, the Bara Brenn, which had sailed from Guilvenic in Brittany.

She came into the harbour to take on fresh water and officers found no signs of unauthorised activity.

They also inspected local businesses to ensure they had the required paperwork for fish bought from registered sources and not hobbyists.
