Good Turnout For St Agnes Fete

There was plenty of tea left but the Pimms ran dry yesterday at the annual St Agnes fete.

The event on the meadow was well attended, particularly by St Mary’s residents and visitors, with St Mary’s boatmen bringing around 600 people to the islands.

They were joined by competitors taking part in the Round-the-Island sailing race, which finished on St Agnes.

And attendees had the choice of the Turk’s Head, to listen and dance to ska band Skaramanga, or chill out on Periglis Meadow to the strains of Carlton Ritz and his Savoy Tango Orchestra.

By 4 o’clock both barrels of Ales of Scilly’s special Olympic Torch brew were empty too.

There were continuous queues for face painting among the youngsters and even one or two pensioners joined in the fun, while the auction outside the main marquee attracted a flurry of bidding – a Sue Lewington painting fetched more than £300 and a pair of Oriel Hicks coasters £50.

Proceeds for the event are earmarked for the refurbishment of the Island Hall. Details of how much was raised will be known later in the week.
