St Mary’s Women To Make Charity Bike Ride

Two St Mary’s women are training for a 874 mile cycle ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End in October.

Sarah Twynham and Kylie Carter will follow the journey made in March 2010 by Carol Drage, Michelle Lewis and Sally Kennel-Webb who were all living on St Mary’s at the time.

Sarah says she spoke with Kylie about the challenge whilst on holiday and the two women wanted to combine a biking holiday with a charity fundraiser. They’ll collect sponsorship for the St Mary’s League of Friends and Cancer Research UK and are hoping to raise £5,000.

Sarah says she’s spoken to Carol about how she prepared for the ride when she did it and that’s motivated her and Kylie even more.

The women have been told that the home stretch through Cornwall is the toughest as it has the biggest hills and gradients and she thinks they may be doing it the harder way by cycling from North to South. They want to use as many B roads as possible and they’ve already decided to go across the top of Scotland, from Thurso to Ullapool and down to Loch Ness.

Helen Pearce is in the process of creating a website for the friends and there will be a chance to make online donations as well.

Sarah says there may also be a fundraising day before the women leave for Scotland on October 4th for the ride, which can’t take longer than 3 weeks.
