New Skate Park Opens

The skate park at Carn Gwaval will re-open today, in time for use throughout the summer holiday.

The newly refurbished skate park, which is now run by the council’s Active Scilly team, has a new adjusted layout and safety has increased.

Some ramps have been repaired and they are more accessible to BMX riders.

A wooden circular bench has also been installed. The feature is designed to give the place a more social and friendly feel, and give the children using the park somewhere to sit and relax.

Active Scilly has also committed to monthly checks to ensure the equipment remains at a high standard.

Sports & Leisure manager Tess Lloyd, says a lot of children and teenagers regularly use the park, for cycling and skateboarding.

David Pearson, lead member for children, said: “This benefits of this resource stretch beyond its health advantages. The skate park gives our islands’ children, especially the older ones, more of their own space. It’s a social centre where friends come to meet up, and the Council’s decision to include new seating is testament to this.”
