Bells Ring Across Islands To Mark Olympics

Bellringers at St Mary's Parish church

St Agnes has become the most south-westerly community in the UK to ring bells to mark the opening day of the London Olympics.

At 8.12am this morning, Jimmy Paget Brown tolled the island’s church bell along with Xanthe Hicks. Jimmy says it also marks Xanthe’s last day at the St Agnes school base.

Around 40 people, mainly visitors, rang bicycle bells at Tesco’s St Nicholas church where Canon Michael Fisher also rang the bell.

A group of around half a dozen islanders congregated outside St Mary’s parish church for bell ringing while eight bell ringers rang the church bells inside.

Mary Leather made the Old Town church bell ring out and on Bryher, the church bell was tolled too.

Islander Cherie Duxbury congratulated the bell ringers saying that, from her St Mary’s home, they sounded lovely.
