Scilly To Join Olympic Bell Ringing Event

St Mary's Parish Church

Residents of St Agnes, Bryher and St Martin’s are being encouraged to join in with St Mary’s and Tresco in marking the opening of the Olympics tomorrow.

People across the country are ringing bells for 3 minutes from 8.12am.

‘All The Bells’ is the idea of Turner Prize-winning artist and musician, Martin Creed, and is part of London 2012.

They couldn’t host the session at 20.12 hours in the evening because it would clash with preparations for the opening show.

Fiona Maybrey spoke to us about plans to ring the St Mary’s Parish Church bells and she’s hopeful that the island handbell ringers will join in too.

People are welcome to gather outside the Church Pavilion, says Fiona, to ring their chosen bells.

On Tresco around 40 people have already agreed to meet to ring bicycle bells from the Bike Hire shop before they celebrate with a bacon butty breakfast at the New Inn.

Peter Gibbon and his daughter Felicity are organising the island response. They are timeshare owners on Tresco and have helped plan the national celebration as part of the Cultural Olympiad.

Felicity says she won’t miss being in London because the whole point is that this is a UK wide event and anyone can take part, even in the most remote communities.

And it’s not just the UK taking part. Felicity says there is even a group in Antarctic planning to ring bells.

Felicty says she know many of the people on Tresco are on holiday so she’ll make sure neighbours know what’s happening!

She asks islanders who want to take part to sign up online at allthebells.com and this will help organisers estimate the level of participation.
