Photographer Says Specialist Holiday Demand Strong

A professional photographer says photography holidays could be developed to bring in extra visitors to our islands in the shoulder period.

Nick Jenkins of Cardiff-based Free Spirit Images has been arranging teaching trips twice a year in Scilly since 2002. He first came to St Mary’s on a commission for the Council when Richard Wilcox was tourism champion.

Nick says the weather is usually most consistent for photography trips in April and in September and he’d like to extend his trips here.

Hobby holidays are a growth area and Mincarlo guesthouse, where Nick has based his tour parties, also host sea swimming events with Swimtrek. The IoS Country Guesthouse has also had success in filling rooms with bedpsaces with groups who come over for painting and history courses.

While the increasing cost of travel is an issue for many regular visitors, Nick says so far, the attraction of a specialist break which will help learners capture the landscapes of Scilly is so strong, the price of tickets has not yet dissuaded people.
