Scilly Represented At National AONB Conference

Council representatives will be attending a national Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty conference next week.

AONB Manager Trevor Kirk says the annual conference is organised by a different area every year. Last year, Scilly was one of the co-hosts and this time it will be held in York.

There have been a number of changes in Government policy recently and Trevor says that by attending the conference, he and Philip Hygate, who is a member of the National Association of AONBs’ Management Board, will have an opportunity to learn how other areas are meeting these challenges.

This includes finding out what types of renewable energy technologies work in different landscapes, how farmers are diversifying and how other AONBs are pitching their tourism offer.

And Trevor said this will be an unusual conference as half of it is field-based.

Delegates will see how things are done on the ground and are able to ask people face-to-face about the challenges and opportunities that they face, says Trevor, and it is not just about lengthy speeches in an air-less auditorium.
