Health Staff Need To Understand Off-Island Challenges

St Martin's

Health and Social Services staff working in Scilly need to understand how living on an Off -Island can make accessing services difficult.

Councillor Christine Savill told last night’s Community Services meeting that she wanted an assurance that new recruits, like mental health workers, should be familiar with the additional challenges.

Richard McCarthy reminded members that there have been carers’ days at Off-Island venues which have brought volunteers and carers together.

Director of Community Services, Penny Penn Howard, suggested that the idea could work both ways and Off-Island carers could also be encouraged to spend time with colleagues on St Mary’s.

But Christine pointed out that they were not professionals and it is important that paid officers experience the Off-Islands.

Penny said the staff induction will address this.
