TIC Hosting Tourism Students

Tourist Information Centre in Hugh Town

Six pupils from the Five Islands School, with an interest in tourism, have spent time meeting visitors at the Tourist Information Centre in Hugh Town.

The BTEC Tourism students are also undertaking a project at St Martin’s campsite and have been developing ideas on branding and marketing.

They showed their ideas to visitors so they could get direct feedback.

Sophie Hughes from the TIC says they try and host the students two or three times during their courses and said it’s a great opportunity for the students to learn about tourism and develop communication skills.

Sophie says it’s been a two-way street. While the students were interested in the visitors’ feedback, tourists questioned the pupils on what it’s like to grow up in Scillly and they asked about the new school.

There’s not a formalised work experience placement or internship within the TIC but Sophie says they encourage any young people with an interest in studying or working in tourism to go along and see how things operate.
