LEP To Launch Economic Strategy Via Webcast

The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership is choosing a novel way to roll out its new economic strategy on Thursday. They’re inviting businesses to take part in a live webcast over the internet.

LEP chairman Chris Pomfret will lead the webcast, which he says will set the future direction for economic growth in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly for the next eight years

There will also be a short film featuring a number of successful business people from Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly that reflect the key points of the strategy.

These will include Zoe Julian from St Martin’s business, Scent from the Islands, who will be describing their successful flower farming and mail order business.

The strategy has taken a year to pull together, since the formation of the LEP last year, and took in the views of around 250 local businesses individually and through the 15 roadshows around Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

It’s focused around four main themes – business growth, skills, knowledge and the environment.

Chief Executive of the Council of the Isles of Scilly, Philip Hygate, who represents our islands on the LEP Board, said: “The LEP strategy is accessible and brief, but carries a very determined effort to support Enterprise in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

“For Scilly, I am also pleased to say, there is a specific aim to champion the resolution of the long-term transport links between the islands and the mainland.”

He added: “The business strategy entrenches a belief that economic growth should not damage our environment or culture.”

Philip said there are a lot of businesses on Scilly who, through their hard work and determination, have now reached a stage where on the mainland they would look to expand further afield, and get more custom elsewhere.

This has always been difficult on Scilly, he said, but modern technologies and the work and support of the LEP will open doors to businesses that have not previously been available.”

You can tune into the webcast at 11am on Thursday, 28th June at the LEP website.
