Island Businesses Encouraged To Enter Awards

Islands’ businesses that follow green principles, use local services or invest in their staff all have a chance for recognition as role models for best practice in the Cornwall Sustainability Awards.

Entries can come from across the region but despite our size, Scilly has punched above its weight before.

Three years ago, Tresco Estate was highly commended in the Best Managed Large Business category. And judges say they only narrowly missed out on the gold.

This year, there’s a new award for start-ups under 28 months old with the Green Shoots category.

Anthony Weight, co-founder of the awards, said companies that really buy in to sustainability find that they reduce their overheads, have lower staff sickness rates and lower unit costs.

And he says the size of Scilly businesses won’t mean we are overlooked. He said they often have ‘David and Goliath’ battles between small B&Bs and multimillion pound companies.

But Anthony says there hasn’t been too much interest from Scilly this year, which he says is a shame because many island operations could excel in innovation and resourcefulness, particularly with our high energy costs and problems with waste.
