Ceremony Marks Start Of Armed Forces Week

Organiser Jenny Bagnall raises the flag, watched by Council Chair Mike Hicks and Chief Executive Philip Hygate

The start of Armed Forces Week was marked yesterday with the raising of a special flag outside the Town Hall.

Local Council officials and members of the community, as well as ex-service personnel, attended the ceremony.

Council Chair Mike Hick, gave a speech in which he said it was important to recognise the work that service personnel around the world do on our behalf.

The flag was raised by organiser Jenny Bagnall, followed by a brief prayer by Anglican Chaplain, Canon Peter Walker.

Mike said afterwards that the islands have several people serving in the armed forces and it helps the families to, “recognise we’re on their side.”

He said we live in a free world, and that’s largely down to the work of our armed services.

Mike also encouraged people to attend the Armed Forces Day on Holgate’s Green this Saturday.

The flag will remain flying outside the Town Hall until next Monday.
