Alderney Officials Complete Visit To Scilly

St Mary's

The Council’s Chief Executive and Chairman have hosted a two-day visit from Alderney.

The delegation from the Channel Island wanted to share experiences and explore any common issues although the visit was primarily arranged to discuss airport operations.

States Member Geoffrey Sargent says that his local airport was also under pressure to increase revenue and, like St Mary’s, there have been discussions over charging for car parking.

Although Alderney, with a population of 2,400 people, doesn’t have VAT there is an uplift in construction costs, similar to Scilly because of the cost of freight.

Another shared issue is the demand for affordable, social housing and declining visitor numbers.

There’ll be no formal arrangement to work together but Geoffrey says the two authorities will remain in contact to share knowledge, something he says could be of great benefit to both sides.
