School Gains Medals At County Championships

The Five Islands School’s Head of P.E says he’s delighted at how three young athletes from Scilly performed at the County Championships in Cornwall on Saturday.

Martin Songhurst says Zoe Hitchens and Yasmin Robson gained overall equal third place in the girl’s high jump for their 1.35m jump. The winning jumper cleared 1.4m.

And in the boy’s event, Rory Guy came second and gained a personal best at 1.6m. The winner achieved just 5cm more.

Martin says the conditions at the outdoor track at Par were poor with wind and squally showers and he feels the kids could have done better with more training.

The school runs an after-school athletics group but they only have 6 weeks for those sports on the curriculum so probably get just one high jump session each year.

Rory also won the 3000m intermediate boys run. He was the only entrant but made good time at 11mins 10 seconds.
