More Entrants For This Year’s Dog Show

Best-in-Show winner Colin, the Jack Russell.

The cost of building the new veterinary surgery in Old Town is fully paid off.

Saturday’s dog show was arranged in the hope that entry fees, refreshments and donations would meet the outstanding £1,000 of the cost of the £190,000 scheme. But after hearing about the Vet Support Group goal on Radio Scilly news on Saturday morning, John and Susie Nichols offered £1,000 in memory of their 5-year-old Newfoundland dog, Lottie, who lost her battle with cancer at the start of the weekend.

Chairman of the Vet Support Group, Bill Wilson, says that was an incredibly generous donation from the Nichols.

Bill paid tribute to his other committee members on the surgery scheme. He said Jo Probert’s original idea of a new surgery with living accommodation to reduce the ongoing costs for the islands’ vet, has finally come to fruition.

And he says the fact the surgery project is now complete takes some getting used to. He says it’s a fantastic achievement for such a small community to raise the £190,000 needed for the building and to complete the project in just over four years.

Jo said that, although the pressure is now off, all money raised from now on through fundraising and the membership scheme will help to maintain this vital facility and pay for the upgrade of new equipment when needed. First off will be the upgrade of the x-ray machine.

Bill says there were even more entrants for the dog show this year than last time. He says around 70 dogs took part in the show.

The event on Saturday raised £988, on top of £400 raised by a raffle at the Co-op in Hugh Town.

The overall Best-in-Show rosette was awarded to 6-year-old Jack Russell, Colin. His owners, Ethan and Corey Graham said that they were delighted.

Corey said Colin also won a first place and a fourth place in the individual competitions and Ethan added he was surprised he’d won because he’s “such a crazy dog.”
