Plans For Carn Gwaval Site Being Finalised

Old primary school at Carn Gwaval

Plans for redeveloping the former primary school building at Carn Gwaval as a lifelong learning centre and nursery have been finalised.

The Council claim it will provide new community project facilities on a single site instead of at various St Mary’s locations.

There’ll be a permanent base for the Memory Café volunteers, mainly on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Tresco’s Abbey Gardens will suggest suitable plants for a sensory garden.

The path through it will be wheelchair and disabled buggy-friendly so carer and patient may walk side by side.

The building will have Velux roof lights added to bring more light in and will be repainted white on the existing rendering to match the new school.

Part of the site has already been redeveloped, including a new gym and fitness centre, as part of the sports hall project.

The Council says that one new sports hall job will be created and 4 full-time roles will be offered in the nursery, which will be contracted out. The site will host the equivalent of 16 permanent roles but some of those will be relocating from other Council offices.

There’ll only be one additional car space, three disabled bays and a bus parking area will be added. There’ll also be 20 cycle spaces provided.
