New Travel Warrant System Starts Today

Booking travel for a medical appointment at Treliske, West Cornwall or St Michael’s hospitals should be easier from today.

Starting this morning, as soon as you have a hospital appointment call or letter, you can ring and pay your £5 travel warrant on the phone with a debit card.

And you’ll be able to ring from 8am-8pm weekdays and 10.30am-5pm at the weekend. The number will be on your appointment letter.

The £5 reduced fare will also be offered to anyone acting as an approved medical escort.

Councillors attending the Health Committee were outraged earlier in the year when NHS staff suggested that patients were abusing the supported travel costs scheme for shopping trips.

The Chief Executive of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust later apologized.

There’ll be a 10-day restriction on amount of time you can spend away from Scilly as an outpatient. In-patients won’t be affected.

Islanders who need treatment from Peninsula Health or the Duchy Hospital will need to take a form and cash to St Mary’s Hospital on weekdays.

Jane Hurd of LINk says islanders seem to have appreciated the recent session at the Church Pavilion to explain the changes. LINK is monitoring the changes and will meet early in September to judge the success, or otherwise, of the scheme.
