Cricket: St Martin’s Beat Tresco In Unscheduled Match

Report by Colin Daly

An unpromising cloudy Sunday saw an extra St. Martin’s v Tresco match.

The double wicket contest planned for the day had to be abandoned because of St. Mary’s difficulties but your correspondent prefers a proper match anyway.

St. Martin’s won the toss and decided to bat first. They got away to a steady start to the 25 overs but a couple of sixes by Tony Goddard liven affairs up and they went on to score a respectable 174 for 5.  Top scorers were A. Spencer at 45, and Matt Kerrigan at 40 not out, but others had reasonable scores too. The sun put in a welcome appearance during the innings.

Tresco started in a similar manner to the home team but soon fell behind the run rate. A. Moore scored 24 but the middle order collapsed apart from a 21 by L. Hamilton. The captain, J. Taylor scored a brave 26 not out but was left with 78 to score off the last ball. A. Hill and Tony Goddard took 2 wickets each.

The sun shone and we were forced to eat the burgers bought for the other occasion.
