Restaurant Celebrates 30th Birthday

Juliet May at last night's 30th anniversary of Juliet's Garden Restaurant

A St Mary’s restaurateur celebrated 30 years of her business last night.

Juliet May opened Juliet’s Garden at Porthloo in 1982, operating from a small shed and using a secondhand Belling cooker to make scones and light snacks.

Since then the businesses has built a restaurant and added evening service.

Juliet marked the occasion last night with a function featuring music from Chris Garret’s jazz band.

Juliet says it “feels like just yesterday” since she opened. She remembers baking cakes the night before opening and sitting with husband, Andrew, in their flat, wondering whether the business would work.

Juliet says there have been many staff who have worked at the restaurant over the years that she still keeps in touch with.

Chef Andy Corners, who has worked at Juliet’s for the past 10 years says there’s great camaraderie in the team. He says they “probably have too much of a laugh” sometimes and says they sometimes get told off for it!

But he says the restaurant must be doingthings right to have lasted for 30 years.

Things have changed over the years too, says Juliet. People’s expectations are much higher, but visitors to Scilly are always in a very relaxed mood and want to enjoy their holiday.

Juliet says she has no plans to retire. “It’s all been great fun,” she said.
