Sun Shines For Tresco And Bryher May Day

The sun was shining yesterday for this year’s Tresco and Bryher school May Day celebration.

The annual tradition alternates between Bryher and Tresco and this year’s event took place yesterday on Marian Bennett’s lawn at South Hill on Bryher.

Teacher Susanna Gates said she was looking forward to the day. She said the children have been rehearsing for weeks and they had a final dress rehearsal on Wednesday.

Most of the children know the words by heart, says Susanna, but the new pupils in the reception class have been working hard to catch up.

They dressed as birds, butterflies and bees to dance around the maypole.

Millie Driscoll was this year’s May Queen with Jack Austin as Captain. William Shaw and Alex McMurray were the Guards.

Next Tuesday and Wednesday the children will also be serving tea and cakes to members of the public in the school garden on Tresco. They’ll be dressing in a ‘Royal Jubilee’ theme and will be open from 10.30am to 2.00pm on both days.
