Bowls At The Ready For Jubilee Cup Cake Contest

If you think you make the best cup cakes on the islands, then you could soon get the chance to prove it.

Organisers of the upcoming Diamond Jubilee celebrations are holding a Grand Jubilee Cup Cake competition to coincide with the Rotary Fun Day on Holgate’s Green on 5th June.

Organiser, Sue Hodgson, says you’re asked to make four, similar cup cakes decorated in a Jubilee theme.

There are various age categories “from tots to oldies” with a special, mystery prize for each winner.

The extra cup cakes will be sold after the competition at the street party with proceeds going to the Air Ambulance appeal.

Tom Scott, chair of the Theatre Club, will be judging the entries. He said he’s “looking forward to it with relish.”

He added: “After spending most of your life being subjected to my mother’s cooking including all sorts and varieties of cake and buns and being able to sample everything at Longstone cafe over 10 years, I hope that I will be able to judge these cakes well and trust that the knowledge I have will aid me with my decision.”

Tom said he’ll be looking for a well risen cake with a springy texture, not too dense and not too crumbly. Bold colours and fun themes as well as more modest designs will be great to see too, he says.

Anyone wishing to take part should bring their sweet creations to Holgate’s between noon and 2.30pm on the 5th June.

Cakes should be arranged on a paper plate bearing your name and phone number.
