Council Opens Tendering For Innovation Centre Project

How the new centre will look.

The Council is inviting local builders to register their interest in construction work for the new Porthmellon Innovation and Enterprise Centre.

The building, which was passed by planners in February, is on the site of the former wholesalers business.

Diana Mompoloki from the Council’s Economic Development Department says letters were sent out to all local builders last Friday and she’s already had four responses wanting further details of the work.

There were complaints by some local builders recently who felt they had been overlooked for work on the Porthcressa Regeneration Project, which is being built by Kier Western.

However, Diana says large projects, such as the one at Porthmellon, which will cost around £1.5m, need to be tendered through a transparent process with applications looked over by professionals.

This is one of the conditions of accepting European grant money.

And Diana says they’ll need evidence of quality from previous projects.

Anyone applying will need to spend time on paperwork and gaining the required professional accreditations if they want to be considered. They will also have to be able to cash flow the project.

Builders can register interest and gain access to the Pre-Qualification Questionnaire (PQQ) documentation by emailing piecentre-tenders@scilly.gov.uk.

The closing date for expressions of interest is noon on Tuesday 5th June 2012 with the deadline for receipt of completed questionnaires being noon on Wednesday 13th June 2012.

Building work is expected to take place over this coming winter season.
