Special Diamond Jubilee Concert Being Planned

Organiser June Lethbridge

A combined group of islands’ musicians and entertainers are planning to finish off the Diamond Jubilee celebrations on Scilly in style next month with a celebration of everything British.

The Grand Jubilee Concert at the Town Hall will feature dozens of local performers including the Tea Band, the 70-voice vocal group, The Scilly Sirens, male vocalists Bone Idol, the handbell ringers and St Martin’s–based pianist Sue Murray.

June Lethbridge has pulled the programme together.

She says islanders had the idea for a special event to mark the Jubilee after the Christmas carol concert last year.

June says all the performances will be chosen for the sense of occasion and she’s asked performers to find something patriotic, or a piece that represents England, Scotland or Wales.

The hall will be dressed in a very patriotic way with a Windsor Castle backdrop and ‘rampant silver lions’.

The backdrop has had quite a few outings. It was first painted for the Silver Jubilee in 1977 and also did service 10 years ago at the Golden Jubilee.

June says there’ll be limited seats available, around 100, so people will have to get their tickets early. She added there will be almost as many people on stage as in the audience and they’ll be charged a half-price ticket to watch the show.

The one-night-only event will raise money for good causes and June expects the collection to be split between the Air Ambulance and Water Aid.

She wants attendees to bring a flag or something red, white and blue that can be waived from the audience on the evening.

The concert takes place on Wednesday June 6th at 8.00pm. Admission will be £6.
