St Mary’s airport firefighter, Jeff Smith, has been recognised as the top student for 2011 at the International Fire Training Centre (IFTC) at Teesside.

Jeff attended the awards evening with Howard Cole, Airport Fire Service Manager, and was presented with the award for top performing student last year, selected from all their Firefighter Initial Courses.

Howard says around 50 people would have been through that training which is offered in three sessions each year.

The Teesside training centre attracts firefighters from airports across Britain and abroad.

The Initial Course is run over six weeks and allows the students to acquire the practical and theoretical skills necessary to operate as an airport firefighter.

Firefighters are re-evaluated there after 4 years.

Howard says the training is superb and is all centred on dealing with incidents related to aircraft.
