Police Warning Over Scam Olympic Lottery Letters

Our Islands’ police sergeant is warning people to be wary of scam letters sent through the post.

Sgt Colin Taylor says a resident here received a letter saying they’ve won a prize in a national lottery draw related to the Olympics. The letter asks for an administration fee to release the money.

Colin says it’s clearly a fraudulent attempt and these letters get sent out in their thousands, although there’s no evidence that Scilly is being targeted specifically.

He says the police can’t investigate these letters because there needs to be actual evidence of a fraud occurring. They often refer to UK websites or even phone numbers, which invariably get redirected to a foreign number.

Colin says in his police career, he has encountered people who have lost thousands of pounds to these people.

His advice is to shred the letter and to let one of the police team know so they can spread the word.
