Council Staff To Be Asked Ways To Cut Costs

In the week that the highest-earning Council officers have had their basic pay boosted by £4,500 and with Vice Chairman Marian Bennett claiming some staff salary has been reduced, Town Hall workers will be asked to find news ways to make savings.

At last night’s Council meeting, Director of Finance and Resources, Peter Lawrence, shared his report that calls for improvements in some areas of expenditure and he wants Council staff to tell him how.

Workers will be offered incentives for reducing costs.

Marian said it was important to involve staff in the efficiency drive and gather their ideas and there could be bonuses for staff identifying significant savings.

Peter Lawrence told the meeting that, “small is the operative word,” although no details on what incentives are on offer were shared.

Councillor Richard McCarthy voiced concerns over how the message would be communicated in case it appeared patronising.

Councillor Amanda Martin made suggestions on ways to reduce outgoings. She often receives three copies of the same letter to the St Mary’s museum.

Amanda suggested that St Mary’s Councillors could collect documents from the Town Hall instead of having them mailed.

But Sue Pritchard responded by reminding Councillors of an obligation to get letters out within set timeframes.

Peter Lawrence showed members his iPad and said he tried to follow the whole meeting on that to save printing.

Members agreed to support the efficiency drive.

These people have huge salaries compared to ordinary Scillonians. They work for a tiny community, but expect to be paid the same as people working for 60,000+ people. Their arrogance and greed are shocking and disgusting. It wouldn’t be so bad if they did a decent job.To freeze the pay of the low paid, and then ask them to think of ways to save money after they award theselves hefty pay rises is beyond belief.

Rather than wasting time tinkering at the edges we need to be looking in detail at the potential savings and practicalities of transferring at least the Chief Officer roles to Cornwall.

Geez, thanks Peter ….. now all the Town Hall staffers and Councillors will be wanting us to buy them iPads so they can ‘save’ on printing.
