Scilly Youth MPs Open Porthcressa Playpark

The Council has opened officially the Porthcressa Play Park, 10 months after it was originally handed over to the community.

A cutting-of-the-ribbon ceremony took place on Wednesday with newly elected Member of the Youth Parliament, 12-year-old Alice Chuter, and Deputy, 14-year-old Maddie Sibley, doing the honours.

The ceremony was also attended by Director of Adult, Children’s and Community Services, Penny Penn-Howard and Councillors Chris Savill, David Pearson and Marian Bennett.

The new £40,000 play park at the side of Porthcressa Beach was originally opened to children in June last year  but proved so popular that youngster using the facility eroded the grass surface.

So Council officials had to remove the swings and hammock, the most popular pieces of equipment, to give it time to grow back.

The intervening months have now allowed the grass surface to recover and the park to be finished properly with adequate fencing and the original equipment re-instated.
