Alzheimer’s Drugs Available In Scilly

All Alzheimer drugs that the Government’s medicine’s watchdog, NICE, says can be offered to patients are available in Scilly.

Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Primary Care Trust has confirmed that onepezil, galantamine, rivastigmine and memantine are available for prescribing locally.

It follows claims by the Dementia Alliance that not all Care Trusts are offering the full range of approved treatments.

Speaking on Radio Scilly, expert Professor Peter Passmore of Queen’s University, Belfast, says islanders with concerns about their memory should insist on help from their GP and not just put their concerns down to age.

And Simon Kitchen from the Dementia Action Alliance says if you have concerns you should insist that your doctor addresses them. “Don’t be fobbed off,” he says.

Emma Corlett of the Cornwall and Isles Of Scilly Primary Care Trust says it is for the treating clinician to decide in conjunction with the patient, family or carer what product is the most appropriate for an individual patient.
