St Mary’s Cancer Research Branch Raises £9000

Last year's Stride for Life in aid of Cancer Research

There’ll be some changes to the fundraising plans of the St Mary’s Cancer Research UK branch this year.

They raised £9000 last year through their regular events, which was a lower amount than previous years, but Lewis Johnson’s sponsored bike ride brought an unexpected £4,500 on top of that sum.

The Stride for Life 5km fun run around St Mary’s is being moved to July 22nd this year to avoid a clash with other events, such as the Scilly Ten event.

There’ll also be a pub-to-pub charity bucket collection each evening over gig weekend.

One group member will be making and selling craft items to boost funds. Honor Gormley is selling bracelets in the Pilchard Pit at £5 each and all funds will go towards the charity.

Sheila says she’s brought back a fundraising idea from her holiday in spain too.

She says there was a fundraiser on the seafront where everyone bought a metre of ribbon and tied them together to see how far it would stretch.

Yesterday’s AGM elected the previous year’s committee and that means Beryl Read remains in the chair.

Sybil Pugh keeps the Vice Chairman role and June Jones remains Treasurer.

Sheila Thomas will stay in the Secretary position.

The task of trying to beat last year’s total starts on Thursday with a coffee morning at Tregarthen’s Hotel.
