Scilly-Born Woman To Celebrate 100th Birthday

Celebrations are planned this week for the 100th birthday of a Scilly-born woman who now lives in America.

Sylvia Phillips grew up on the islands and lived here until she was 8 years old.

Her dad was Arthur Ellis, a stone mason by trade, and her mum was Ellen Phillips and they emigrated to America when she was a young woman.

Sylvia was one of the first female school bus drivers in the State of Ohio, driving a full size bus for many years.

Her daughter Kay said she still drives a car and has just had her licence renewed until she is 104.

Kay says her mum is proud of her island roots. She still has family here on the islands and has returned on many occasions, the last time being 7 years ago.
