MP Says Superfast Broadband Plans Unclear

Scilly’s MP says it’s curious that, two years into a programme to roll out superfast broadband across our region, BT still won’t tell him what their plan for Scilly is.

Andrew George met with senior BT officials, including their Director of Public Affairs, in London this week in an attempt to get dates and details.

He says they were uncooperative with the information.

The Islands’ Council were told that the project, which is drawing down millions of pounds of EU cash, will use a fibre optic cable to link the islands with Cornwall.

But BT wouldn’t confirm or deny it to the MP.

Andrew George does, however, feel reasonably optimistic that the upgrade will happen.

BT spokesman, Jason Mann, says they are actively working on plans for the renewal of the broadband service on the Isles of Scilly.

He says the geography of the islands make that planning uniquely challenging and it is premature to confirm the exact solution.

BT expects to provide service sometime during 2013.
