Fake Police Officer Calling Businesses

Businesses in Scilly are being warned about a scam where a fake police officer calls and asks you to pay for advertising in a community-minded leaflet.

The caller says that you have paid for advertising in an anti-drugs pamphlet and need to pay up.

One St Mary’s restaurant owner was contacted this week but became suspicious when the man said his name was James.

There isn’t a police officer with that first or second name on the islands.

Sergeant Colin Taylor says the police would never call and ask for cash and if you had doubts you could ask for the officer’s badge number and call the station to verify it.

He’s concerned because someone did fall for the trick a few years ago, again on St Mary’s.

In some cases a leaflet featuring the advertiser’s message has been produced and sent, but as they are not distributed, it is worthless.
