Islands’ Football Team Secure Win On Mainland

Islanders have had more success on the pitch during this year’s mainland football tour.

In 2011, St Mary’s football club lost both games but this weekend, after a 2-0 defeat at Helston on Friday, the team secured a 4-3 win at Porthleven yesterday.

And the most talked about player was an islander, Eddie Williams who, despite Friday’s result, was named Man of the Match and yesterday scored what Mark Twynham termed ‘the goal of the season,’ a 30-yard volley.

Rob Greenlaw, Liam Greenlaw and Paul Williams got the rest of the islanders’ goals yesterday with Alex Sandford gaining the ‘Man of the Match’ title for an energetic on-pitch performance.

The Islanders fielded a team with a wide age range. The oldest player was 48 year old Bo Green.

Around 150 people watched yesterday’s game with some former residents and the regular Mullion golf visitors attending.

Mark says they’re now trying to encourage the mainland players to visit before the next season starts.
