St Mary’s To Get New Butchers and Bakery

St Mary’s is getting a new local produce shop.

The former Griffins Butchers shop, which has been empty since October, will be opening under new management by the start of the season

Alex Plowman, who is currently being employed as the Park House cook, is to open a butchers, bakers and islands-made food store before gig weekend.

Alex has experience of butchery from his hometown of Pontypridd in Wales.

He says he’ll bake bread and make cakes from scratch instead of importing part-bake goods for finishing off.

Alex isn’t worried about opening a retail business at a time when the economy is down.

He says there’s big demand for a butcher and bakers and people have missed those shops on St Mary’s.

And Alex says he is excited to be starting a new venture. He’s looking forward to running his own business and hopes it will grow.

The Plowman Food Company will be open 6 days a week initially and Alex says he’ll assess demand for Sunday opening.

The new shop won’t close at quiet times of year but Alex says he may adjust opening hours during those periods. He’s going to see how it goes this year.

Alex won’t be working alone. He’s taken on Eugene Hogan as his manager.

And he says there’ll definitely be some regional favourites in the shop like pasties and even Welshcakes on St David’s day!
