First Stage Of One-Act Play Festival This Month

Budding playwrights will have a chance to win £100 and get their work performed on the islands at the first One-Act Play Festival and Competition later this month.

Organiser Jenny Byers says that six scripts have been entered and these will be performed as ‘rehearsed readings’ with scripts on Saturday 31st March and Sun 1st April.

The theatre club will be acting out the short plays on stage although this first round won’t feature costumes.

Writers include Maggie Perkovic, Mary Dean, Steve Sims and a play by organiser, Jenny.

A group of pupils at the Five Islands School, have also submitted a script.

The scripts will be judged by Paul Dodgson, who has written and produced plays for BBC Radio 4 and spent 18 months as a writer for Eastenders.

Jenny says four plays will be selected to go forward for performance as part of Art Scilly Week on Friday 18th May & Sunday 20th May.

The winning play will be decided by combining an audience vote in May with the score allocated by Paul in March and St. Mary’s Theatre Club are giving a prize of £100 to the winning playwright.

The contest is being run to the All-England Playwriting competition rules, in case the winner wants to go further by taking their work to the Cornwall Theatre Club awards.

The first round of the competition is being held on Saturday 31st March at 7.30pm and Sunday 1st April at 2pm in the Town Hall with doors opening half an hour before.
