Fund Launched To Support Fishing Industry

Over £1m is being made available to support the local fishing industry, following the launch of the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Fisheries Local Action Group, or FLAG.

The funding, which totals £1.13 million, has been provided by the European Union and Defra and will be used by FLAG to fund development projects and training in the commercial fishing industry in our region.

Isles of Scilly Maritime Officer, Steve Watt, says funding for training is likely to be the most popular area for the commercial industry in Scilly.

He says the legislation regarding fishermen’s qualifications are always being upgraded and the training required for certification is very expensive.

Steve thinks a group application from the Fishermen’s Association would be really useful.

There may also be other innovative schemes worth exploring in the marketing world, says Steve, such as the swift export of live or cooked Scillonian shellfish to top restaurants on the mainland.

Steve says anyone wishing to find out more about the fund should contact him at Porthmellon.
