New Atlantic Hotel Manager Outlines Plans

Neil Moorton

The new manager of the Atlantic Hotel has been outlining his vision for the business.

Neil Moorton has taken over operations at the St Austell Brewery-owned business.

There’ll be some menu changes, more use of the harbourside roof terrace as well as breakfast and lunchtime meals. Until recently, the hotel has only offered evening meals to non-residents.

Neil has a lot of experience in the hospitality industry. After a spell in the Merchant Navy, he worked on the QE2 for over three years, before returning to land.

He worked his way up to management after barman and head chef roles.

He says he’s not an ‘office person’ preferring to work in the kitchen or the restaurant where he can be with the guests.

He’s moved here with his wife and two daughters and says he won’t find island life a challenge as he’s originally from the Isle of Wight. Neil says Scilly has felt “like home” right from the start and says people have been very friendly and helpful.

Neil is keen to make more use of the outside terrace and wants to offer a ‘warm welcome’ to residents and non-residents alike. He’s also brightening up the interior, bringing in artwork by local artists.

Neil says it’s a tough time to take over the hotel but says he wants to build a firm basis for when the economy starts to pick up again.

He says he wants to concentrate on the basics of ‘good food and good service’ and will know if it’s worked if he has a full terrace of customers enjoying the views and a glass of wine in the summer.
