New Initiative Launched To Reduce Plastic Bags

The Isles of Scilly Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty  and the Five Islands School Green Team have launched a campaign to make the Isles of Scilly free of plastic bags.

The Plastic Bag Free Campaign will aim to build on the various efforts of recent years to reduce plastic bag use in Scilly and they say this time, they are hoping to make a “real and permanent change.”

Clare Lewis from the AONB says local businesses will be invited to join the Plastic Bag Free Campaign, beginning with the ‘pennies for plastic’ initiative, where customers will be charged a small levy on plastic bags, with the proceeds going to charity.

Thereafter, when current supplies of plastic bags have been exhausted, businesses are invited to donate to charity the equivalent amount of money that would normally have been invested in plastic bags for free distribution.

Students of the Green Team will also be conducting surveys on plastic bags use across the islands.

Similar initiative has been tried in the past, with local business such as the Foredeck and The Deli offering reusable jute bags, and the former Wholesalers charging for plastic bags.

However, it’s unclear how this latest initiative will be any different from those earlier efforts.
