Third Head Of Finance In Three Years Quits

The Town Hall

For the third time in three years, the second-in-command at the Council’s Finance Department has quit.

Councillors have paid tribute to the work of outgoing Head of Finance, Iain McCulloch, with General Purposes committee chairman, Fred Ticehurst, saying he was, “personally very sorry” at Iain’s resignation.

Fred said, “we owe a great deal to his expertise and experience,” adding that the presentation of data had improved “enormously.”

Marian Bennett said that he would be “sadly missed” as he put a “human face” on budgets and Richard McCarthy told members it was a “shame we hadn’t been able to retain him.”

Recruiting someone to this position and retaining them will be Director of Finance, Peter Lawrence’s next challenge, although he’s had plenty of experience in staff retention issues in his department over the past few years.

Previous post holders and ‘number twos’ to Peter, Adam Vickers and Paula Smith, also resigned.

But it’s unlikely the applicant will be offered the flexible approach offered to Mr Lawrence who has previously been allowed to work from his home in Exeter and commute to the islands.

We had this problem with 5 heads at the school not so very long ago! Both this job and the School Heads are directly overseen/managed by the Chief executive. All 8 are just coincidences I suppose.

How would Lady Bracknell consider this situation of loss, if losing two is considered careless?
