Council Discusses Gig Championship

The Council has granted permission for the World Pilot Gig Championship Committee to use Holgate’s Green during the May Bank Holiday.

Neville Gardner, Chief Technical Officer from the Council, told members of the General Purposes committee that the event has been, “greatly improved by the cooperation” of that committee in allowing the use of the site.

He added that the Council changed the layout of the venue to allow the use of the Boat Park area and that has been a “great success” since it leaves the grass on the Green relatively unscathed.

Neville told the meeting that he was happy to cooperate.

His report stated that the event requires Council staff manpower for removing waste and litter regularly, but the enthusiasm for the championships and the interest in gigs by the Council’s labour force often brings more “hands on” involvement “than is booked on timesheets.”

Once again there will be the road closure of the Strand.
