Samson Hill Gardens To Get New Lease Of Life

A person who grew up on Bryher and dreamed of living in the house across the bay has finally achieved her goal.

Issy Tibbs is moving back from the mainland to run a B&B business at Samson Hill Cottage.

Issy spent her childhood at Veronica Farm on Bryher and used to love exploring the secluded gardens at Samson Hill, a Duchy property, which she says were “stunning.”

The old house, which was known locally as ‘Doc Evans’ has recently been knocked down and completely rebuilt and Issy says when she heard the lease was being advertised, she and her partner decided to apply for it.

She says she was “over the moon” when they found out they had been successful.

Issy says they’re currently tackling the garden, which hasn’t been touched for at least ten years and the clearing work has been exhausting (Issy has put photos on her blog here).

Thankfully, a lot of the original flowers and plants from Doc Evans’ garden have survived under years of brambles.

Issy says she’s looking forward to be back on Bryher and being able to spend more time with her family and friends as well as bringing the gardens at Samson Hill back to life.

She’s putting together a book for the guests about the history of the house and gardens and would be interested in hearing from anyone who knows anything about the history of the old house and who lived there.
