St Mary’s Restaurant Changes Hands

A well-known St Mary’s restaurant business is changing hands in time for the new season.

The Boatshed, located on Porthmellon beach, has been bought by Amelia and Richard Mills, who already own the neighbouring Sailing Centre, as well as the Harbourside Guesthouse and Pilchard Pit take away.

Richard told us it’s taken a while to sort out the legal issues around the lease, but everything is now signed and he and Amelia will be racing to “spruce the place up” in time for the opening of the season.

Amelia grew up in the catering and hospitality business and Richard says she always wanted to have her own place on the beach “so jumped at the chance.”

He says there will be changes to the menu and branding and the restaurant is likely to open longer than at present, from 10am through to late in the evening.

They’ve also found an excellent chef, says Richard, who is very excited about a new opportunity to show his skills.

When planning permission was originally granted for the restaurant several years ago, a condition was there should be public access to the toilet facilities.

However, there have been some issues around this under the previous owners, with Councillors complaining that the access was not well publicised.

Richard says they have no problem with access to the facilities, although due to the design and layout of the building, he says this can only be during opening hours.

Richard also hopes the different businesses will compliment each other well. The Sailing School has lots of family trade and often a member of the family might not want to do an activity so now they can sit and have a coffee or they can take the children afloat while parents sit and have another glass of wine with their lunch!

Richard admits it’s a worrying time for businesses in Scilly and it isn’t going to be easy, but says everyone on Scilly needs to make sure the visitors that do come get a great experience from the islands as a whole, and encourage them to come back.

He and Amelia says they’re excited about welcoming locals and visitors to their new business both day and night, and trying to create a bit of a buzz and a great vibe on Porthmellon in general.
