New Sports Hall To Open On Thursday

The Queen Elizabeth II Community Sports Hall will be opening its doors to the public this week and ScillyToday has had a sneak preview.

The new centre, funded by Sport England and based at the old Carn Gwaval primary school site, features a brand new multigames sports hall with viewing gallery, new changing facilities and treatment rooms.

The site will also eventually house the gym equipment, currently based at Carn Thomas.

The facility is a major leisure development for the islands and will allow a range of sports to take place, including basketball, hockey, 5-a-side football, badminton, judo and trampolining.

There will also be nets for cricket training.

The hall can be rented as a whole or in sections, divided by full-height curtains.

Community Services Project Coordinator, Amy Hiron, says the new facility, together with outdoor multi-use games area at the adjacent school, is a fantastic addition to the islands and will provide a real benefit to the community.

Amy says the new centre will be launched with a Health Fair and Open House on Thursday 12th January, from 11am to 3pm, including a ‘ribbon cutting’ ceremony at 12.45pm.

Residents can view the centre and obtain health and wellbeing advice.

And on Saturday, there will be a free open session where anyone can come and take part in their favourite sports.
