Abbey Gardens Stocktake Postponed

Mike Nelhams

Plans to survey and catalogue all of the flowers in Tresco’s Abbey gardens were called off yesterday because of health and safety fears.

It was too windy and curator Mike Nelhams was concerned that some small tree branches were brought down at the height of the morning storm.

There wasn’t any major damage, just the tops coming off some eucalyptus, but he says it would have been hard to stocktake with stems and plants being blown around so hard.

Mike says there will be some salt burn to floor-dwelling plants caused by the wind but that won’t be evident for about a month.

He hopes to rearrange the stocktake when the weather gets better.

Tresco Marketing Manager, Alisdair Moore, said the upside was that “bits of the flowers can be enjoyed across the islands and the sea.”
