Shrewsbury Man To Fulfil Wish To Visit Islands

Ben Hughes

A Shropshire man who has been told he has around six months to live will fulfil two of his wishes.

28-year-old Ben Hughes of Shrewsbury was born with a condition called aortic stenosis, which means his heart is unable to pump blood around the body properly.

Four years ago he had a successful heart and lung transplant but unfortunately his condition has since worsened.

His local paper asked him to compile a list of things he wants to do before he dies, and coming here to Scilly and being a radio DJ were on the list.

When Radio Scilly heard about Ben’s wish and we contacted the travel operators and British International Helicopters have offered return tickets for Ben and his wife.

It was a surprise for Ben to hear two of his goals will be achieved in one day as he flies to the islands to host a radio show.

Ben says he wants to raise awareness of organ donation, which changed his life following his operation, and he wants more people to come forward as donors.

Dave Page of British International Helicopters said the company was keen to offer a return trip, especially as Ben wants to use the trip to promote such a good cause.
