MP Concerned Over Great Western Rail Franchise

Penzance Railway Station

Scilly’s MP, Andrew George, has urged transport Ministers to reject short-term contracts for the Great Western train franchise that links Penzance to London.

First Group, who run the service, announced earlier this year that it was taking advantage of a break clause to bow out three years early from 2013.

The Government is expected to invite tenders next year, for what could be a shorter franchise.

Our MP fears that shorter contracts would not give operators the confidence to invest in new rolling stock and they’ll cut services instead.

Mr George campaigned for the retention of the sleeper service five years ago and he’s worried that could be jeopardised.

He has written to Transport Minister, Theresa Villiers, to raise his concerns.
