New Sports Hall To Open In January

The delayed new sports hall at Carn Gwaval will finally open on January 12th, with an open day two days later.

It’s been delayed twice from the original planned handover date in October.

Amy Hiron, Community Services Project Coordinator, says the Council will be taking over the building from builders on 16th December, which will give them plenty of time to get things ready for opening.

She says they’re planning an open day on the 14th January where people can come along to see the centre and get involved in sports, as well as showcasing sports such as trampolining, which haven’t been offered here before.

Flooring in the old Carn Gwavel primary school building, which will house changing rooms, was in a much worse state than expected and builders have had to add damp proofing.

Phil Osmond of project managers, Mace, says the Council had set aside a contingency fund for problems so they’re not over budget, but they’ve had to spend emergency cash that otherwise would have gone to back to the Town Hall.

He couldn’t tell us how much the extra works cost because it’s commercially sensitive but said it is less than 10% of the £16m school and sports hall scheme.
