First Meeting For New Health Board

Council Chambers at the Old Wesleyan Chapel

The first meeting of the new Shadow Health and Wellbeing Board took place yesterday at the Old Wesleyan Chapel.

The board, under the chairmanship of Mike Hicks, has been set up in response to the Government’s reforms of the health system, which bring together health services, traditionally the responsibility of the NHS, with social care, the domain of local authorities.

Felicity Owen, Director of Public Health Services for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, was appointed to the role of Vice Chair.

Councillor Christine Savill was made Deputy Vice Chair.

Other members included local Councillors as well as representatives from Cornwall’s Health Board, the NHS, and the voluntary sector.

The main items of discussion were around setting a strategy for the new group and how to better understand the health needs of islanders, both long-term residents and the large temporary worker population.

The “shadow” in the title of the committee refers to the fact that it’s not yet fully-fledged.

A full board is expected to be in place by April 2013 following final amendments to the Health and Social Care Bill, which is passing through the Lords.
