Islander Gig Still Up For Sale But No Buyers

The Islander gig is still up for sale, but will continue to be used by the juniors for training purposes until a buyer is found.

However, at present, there are no serious offers on the cards for the gig.

The Islander was put up for sale in 2009 to raise funds for St Mary’s Gig Club and some members at the Club’s recent AGM asked whether she was still up for sale.

Outgoing Club vice chairman, John Bird, confirmed to us the gig was still on the market and they wouldn’t reject a serious offer if it came along.

But with the sale of the Tregarthen’s earlier this year to a Dutch club, there is now less pressure on finances.

The Islander was built in 1989 by local boat builder, Tom Chudleigh, as a competition boat for racing against mainland crew.

Altered gig regulations mean she’s been used for the last few years mainly by junior crews.
